Few of the current inventions have proved more valuable than a modest lithium-ion battery. So there is a lot of research that solves this problem, according to Eduan Hu, a battery chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory who is not involved in the paper. And to do so, engineers and chemists have to scrutinize the inside of the battery.
At the heart of it, the lithium-ion battery has two rechargeable battery pockets, one defective, the other good. The center is filled with electrolyte, which is a slurry that carries electricity with molten maion. Scientists have tried to simplify this process by making more stable electrolytes that stand out in colder temperatures.
Current researchers, however, took a different approach: They thought of the carbon-based negative plate instead. They decided to replace graphite with something new. They coated the cobalt compound to extremely high temperatures — about 800 ° F — making tiny particles, shaped like 12-sided dyes, made of carbon atoms. Researchers have developed this carbon dodecahedra to form a plate with a bumpier than flat graphite, making it more sensitive to lithium ions.
When they tested the battery, they found that it was operating at a temperature of minus 31 ° F. Even after more than 200 cycles of discharge, charging, and charging, this battery continued to perform its function.
“The information is incredibly scientific,” says Hu. “But its effectiveness can be limited, as it requires a complex [way] to integrate.”
