The company makes lithium-metal batteries that last as long as lithium-ion

Although lithium-ion batteries have seen continuous improvements, much research has been done on new chemicals that provide a much larger leap in performance. Some of this work has focused on materials such as silicon or sulfur that can store much more lithium than existing electrode materials. But other options completely remove the electrode materials. These include lithium-air and lithium-metal batteries.

All of these have had stability issues because the technology-based batteries have a short lifespan compared to existing lithium-ion batteries (although batteries with a bit of silicon are being used). But on Thursday, a company announced that a developing lithium-metal battery has achieved competitive stability with existing lithium-ion batteries, maintaining 80 percent of its initial capacity in nearly 700 charge / discharge cycles, which has been validated by an external testing lab.

To talk about this advancement and where the lithium metal can be used, we spoke with Richard Wang, founder of Cuberg, a subsidiary of the giant Northvolt battery.

Going metal

Existing lithium-ion batteries contain electrode materials that are capable of storing lithium ions or atoms in gaps and pockets in their structure. Lithium-metal batteries form a layer of lithium on one of the electrodes to remove storage material, which saves weight and volume. Compared to existing lithium-ion batteries, this would store the same amount of charge in a smaller or lighter battery.

Until now, however, lithium-metal batteries tend to have a limited lifespan. Part of the problem comes from the irregular formation of lithium deposits over multiple charge / discharge cycles. As a result, metal thorns called dendrites can be formed, which can damage other components of the battery and potentially short-circuit electrical faults. A second problem is that lithium metal is relatively reactive and can potentially undergo reactions with battery electrolyte chemicals.

The reactions themselves can degrade the electrolyte. But they can also cover the electrode with materials that make it difficult to form a uniform lithium coating, creating a self-strengthening problem. “This new thing will react with your electrolyte and create different types of materials at the interface,” Wang told Ars. “And then these materials are also formed in a non-uniform way, and maybe the parts become insulator, other parts are exposed, and you get more and more non-uniformity.”

So how do you avoid that? Since its inception, Cuberg has focused on the electrolyte. The company is using an ionic liquid as the base of the electrolyte. Wang described this as ionic salt that melts at room temperature (although ions are often more of an organic chemical than an element). These have been tried before but tend to be viscous, which hinders the movement of lithium ions. To help prevent this, Cuberg mixes additional chemicals (one of which is an organic chemical called ether) to lower viscosity and improve stability.

Although this mixture can react with lithium metal, it is designed to create fewer problems when it does. “Another key factor is how to shape the reactivity so that when it reacts it achieves a protective and uniform surface,” Wang said.

What is the result? On the one hand, a significantly higher load density. Although many current lithium-ion batteries have a power density of 270 watts per hour / kilogram, a bag cell based on Cuberg technology achieved 380 Wh / kg, a gain of 40 percent. When an independent lab put the battery into a one-hour discharge and two-hour charging cycle, it found that the battery needed more than 670 cycles to reduce its capacity to 80 percent of the original. For comparison, many lithium-ion batteries aim for a lifespan of 500 cycles.

Wang noted that this test used a constant charging rate throughout the cycle, and while many batteries now use an optimized charging routine, the rate changes depending on how close it is to fully charging the battery. Since the creation of the same layer of lithium metal is very sensitive to the number of lithium charge carriers that accumulate at the electrode, it is likely that better performance can be achieved.

Lithium batteries are primary batteries, which means they cannot be charged once empty. They use lithium metal as an anode. Lithium batteries have a high charge density, which means they last longer than other batteries and can hold more power.
