Sodium ion to challenge the lithium ion battery market

Lithium-ion batteries are receiving the most attention when it comes to emerging technologies in the electric vehicle revolution. However, sodium-ion batteries will bring a new dimension.

While several companies and research organizations are working on the technology, Indi Energy, headquartered at the TIDES Business Incubator, IIT Roorkee, has come up with a  Sodium-ion battery that would use solar as its source material.

“In terms of cost, sodium-ion batteries would cost almost half the price of lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the raw material is abundant,” people involved in the project told DH.

It is an advanced sustainable energy solution based on bio-waste found in the country along with sodium salt precursors. It is expected to significantly reduce the need for and dependence on imports of lithium, cobalt and nickel used in lithium-ion batteries.

Indi Energy CEO and Co-Founder Akash Soni said, “Indi Energy is on a mission to develop low-cost, safe and high-performance sodium-ion batteries made from abundant locally available bio-waste and sodium salt precursors, thereby reducing India’s burden. Li-ion relying on scarce elements like lithium, cobalt and nickel, which are critical elements for making batteries. Indi Energy’s new and proprietary technology would enable indigenous manufacturing of high-performance battery cells in India without depending on foreign imports of critical raw materials that go into battery cell production.”

Co-Founder of Indi Energy and Research & Development, Professor Yogesh Sharma said, “To make India self-sufficient in the energy storage sector, Indi Energy aims to create a local supply chain for the components required to produce Sodium-Ion batteries.”

A pilot project for the innovation has started and the people involved in the project believe that they will soon reach the commercialization stage.
