OLD BETHPAGE, NY (PIX11) – Lithium-ion batteries are to blame for the many recent fires in New York City and Long Island. On Tuesday, Nassau County fire officials shared rescue tips to prevent a disaster in residents’ homes.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman joined the fire officers at the Fire Service Academy in Old Bethpage.
“Lithium batteries are in so many household appliances and how you use and dispose of them is extremely important,” Blakeman said.
The batteries are in cordless and vacuum power tools, laptops, tablets, cell phones, toys, hover boards, electric bikes and scooters.
Michael Uttaro, Chief Marshal of Nassau County Fire, said the batteries themselves are not dangerous. They just need to be handled properly.
“These batteries are not safe when properly charged, using the proper charging equipment, and charging in the right place, such as on a countertop against someone’s bed,” Uttaro said.
John Murray, principal instructor at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & amp; Education Center, it is said that you unplug your devices when they are charged.
“Problems arise when you cut these things overnight and when you forget them,” Murray said. “It simply came to our notice then. It starts to upset the battery, overheats it, and as the phone or toy ages, it can happen more easily. ”
So far this year across New York City, the FDNY has seen more than 80 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries from electric bikes and scooters, resulting in two deaths and more than 20 injuries. Last year, four New Yorkers were killed in fires caused by the batteries.
Because of the difficulty of putting out these types of fires, officials warn not to try to put them out. Instead, get out of your house as soon as possible and call 911.
