Riverside’s SiLi-ion roars into the future with lithium battery innovation | riversideca.gov

SiLi-ion Chairman and Founder Lorenzo Mangolini, Ph.D., and CEO Mark Hatch in Mangolini Lab at the University of California, Riverside. Reliability SiLi-ion

It is the ninth in the World Series and the bases are loaded. That’s how SiLi-ion’s Green-Beret-turned-CEO Mark Hatch describes this stage of the Riverside-based clean-up game for the first time.

“We’re not worried,” Hatch said. “We’re looking for fences.”

SiLi-ion, founded in 2018 by the prestigious University of California, Riverside, professor Lorenzo Mangolini from Italy, develops a comprehensive silicon-carbon “drop-in” supplement for improved lithium-ion battery storage and longevity.

“Silicon is the next best competitor for lithium-ion batteries,” said Mangolini. “It has the potential to change the world dramatically.”

The technology-representing technology uses silicon nanoparticles embedded in high-quality graphite layer. The technology, molded as a powder, is based on a wide range of solid minerals silicon and carbon primed to solve a very serious problem.

“An electric aircraft cannot fly and we will not be able to reach the goals of the electric car by 2030 without much success in lithium-ion batteries,” said Hatch. “We could not afford to spend all our energy on solar power without solar batteries.”

SiLi-ion’s technology is one of six options selected for next-generation battery technology worldwide. What sets SiLi-ion aside from its competition is simple: stable features and easy integration that eliminates the need for large investment for battery manufacturers.

Hatch also points out the advantages of having a campus at a R1-level university – a high-end Carnegie Classification awarded to organizations with cutting-edge research.

“We are proud to be a part of the operations and a driver of the economy in growth and diversity in the community,” Hatch said.

After months of epic competition and ordering, SiLi-ion reached a new level in January as one of the first two from the Inland Empire to win the first-ever Riverside Angel Summit. The conference brought together local and early marketers to promote the culture of the local businesses and promote angel planting.

“This vote of confidence from the angel planting community is the first funding we have received to support technology and accelerate the pace we can move forward,” said Hatch.

Building on this step, Hatch is leading a fundraiser of $ 400 worth of seed to match the existing grant money for the first. An attempt at SiLi-ion marketing began on the ground with $ 13 million in funding from the California Energy Commission and the National Science Foundation.

“Riverside is a good place to take root because it is a transport hub for Southern California, if not the whole country,” Hatch said.

There is no limit to the size of the site and the first regional systems such as the SiLi-ion can do in Riverside.

Riverside City Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson disputes. “SiLi-ion is not only developing technology that promotes strong growth, but they are developing the first culture in Riverside through location, funding, training, and community.”

A small, but powerful couple of two should know within a year if SiLi-ion technology grows and Hatch is optimistic.

“We have as much opportunity to hit a big slam as anyone,” Hatch said.
