Researchers at the University of California, San Diego and Boise State University have developed a new approach to making new materials for lithium-ion batteries. The approach converts non-crystalline material to crystalline – by circulating it with lithium.
With this approach, the team converted a non-crystalline (amorphous) material called niobium oxide into a new crystalline Nb2O5 anode with exceptional lithium storage and fast circulation. This process can be used to make other materials for lithium-ion batteries that cannot be easily made by traditional means.
The study, led by lab researchers Shyue Ping Ong, a professor of nanoengineering at the University of California, San Diego, and Hui (Claire) Xiong, a professor of materials science and engineering at Boise State University, was released on May 2nd. v Natural materials.
The discovery of new materials for lithium-ion batteries has once again become a necessity. Rising gas prices have led to an increase in demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and thus for lithium-ion batteries. However, today’s lithium-ion batteries are still too expensive and recharging too slowly.
“Lithium-ion batteries are the market leader in rechargeable batteries, but there is also a growing demand for high-energy batteries and faster charging times,” said Pete Barnes, Ph.D. a graduate of the Xiong Group and lead author of the work. “If you want to charge your EV for 15 minutes and then travel the next 200 or 300 miles, you need new rechargeable electrodes that can be charged very quickly without losing capacity.”
One of the biggest bottlenecks in charging today’s lithium-ion batteries is the anode. The most common anode is made of graphite, which is very energy dense but cannot be filled too quickly due to the risk of fire and explosion due to a process known as lithium metal coating. Intercalation metal oxides, such as the Nb2O5 rock salt material discovered by the team, are promising anodic alternatives due to the reduced risk of lithium coating at low voltages.
To create a new anode material, the Xiong Group developed an innovative technique called electrochemically induced amorphous to crystalline transformation. The new electrode can achieve a high lithium storage of 269 mAh / g at a charging speed of 20 mA / g, more importantly, it continues to maintain a high capacity of 191 mAh / g at a high charge rate of 1 A / g.
“The most exciting aspect of this work is the discovery of a whole new approach to creating new lithium-ion battery electrodes,” Xiong said. “The trick is to start with a higher energy phase than amorphous material. Just circulating the material with lithium allows us to create new crystal arrangements that exhibit improved properties, such as those made by traditional means, such as solid-state reactions.
The remarkable speed of the anode is due to its disordered rock salt (DRX), which is similar to ordinary table salt, but with Li and Nb atoms arranged randomly. While DRX cathode materials are well known, DRX anodes are relatively rare.
Using computer techniques, Yunxing Zuo, Ph.D. alumnus Ong’s Materials Virtual Lab at UC San Diego, has shown that the process of inserting Li into amorphous Nb2O5 allows materials scientists to access metastable materials. The team also developed metrics to identify other metal oxides that can be synthesized in a similar way. Calculations also show that the DRX structure contains pathways for rapid diffusion of lithium, resulting in a high level of performance.
“We believe this work is just the beginning of a whole new way of thinking about the synthesis of materials,” Ong said. “Atoms like to be arranged in certain ways. When we make materials in the traditional way, we usually get the same arrangements over and over again. This new approach paves the way for the creation of other unconventional metal oxides.
