Researchers are identifying an alternative to lithium-based battery technology

Lithium-ion batteries are now the preferred technology to power electric vehicles, but they are too expensive for long-term energy storage systems, and lithium itself is becoming increasingly difficult to access.

While lithium has many advantages – high energy density and the ability to add renewable energy sources to support network-level energy storage – lithium carbonate prices are at an all-time high. Contributing to the rising prices are the logistical challenges related to the disaster, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the increasing demand for trade. In addition, many governments are doubling the lithium mine because of its high environmental costs and the possibility of human rights violations.

As governments and industries around the world strive to access energy storage opportunities to accelerate clean energy transitions, a new study by the University of Houston and published by Nature Communications suggests the harsh climate of sodium battery technology -sulfur as a possible alternative. Bathium-based battery technology for standard-grid energy storage systems.

Yan Yao, a Cullen professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and his colleagues developed the same glass electrolyte that enables the unloading of reusable sodium and removing the current density more than previously possible.

“The new search for solid electrolytes for all solid sodium batteries should at the same time be inexpensive, easily manufactured, with incredible mechanical and chemical stability,” said Yao, who is also the assistant director of the Texas Center for Superconductivity. at the University of Houston. (TcSUH). “So far, not a single solid sodium electrolyte has been able to meet all four of these requirements simultaneously.”

Researchers have discovered a new type of oxysulfide glass electrolyte that is capable of satisfying all of these requirements at once. The high-energy ball milling method was used to create electrolytes at room temperature.

“The oxysulfide glass has a slightly different structure, resulting in a more complete glass structure,” said Ye Zhang, who conducts research at Yao Group. “The connection between sodium iron and electrolyte, the solid electrode forms self-passivating interphase which is necessary for the retraction and removal of sodium.”

It is difficult to achieve stable coating and removal of sodium ions using sulfide concentrates.

“Our study reversed this theory by establishing not only the current maximum density of all Na-ions with sulfide-based solid electrolytes, but also enabling high performance at ambient temperature-sodium- sulfur batteries, ”Yao explained.

“The new and compact design techniques introduced in this work provide a new framework for the development of safety, low cost, energy density, and long-lasting sodium-solid batteries,” Zhang added.

In addition to Yao and Zhang, study co-authors include former authors Xiaowei Chi and Fang Hao in UH; and Steven Kmiec and related author Steve Martin of Iowa State University. Rice University, Purdue University, and UC Irvine are all partners in this project. This research was funded by the US Department of Energy and the Agency for Advanced Energy Research Projects (ARPA-E).

Can magnesium replace lithium?

Scientists have tested many metals to convert lithium batteries. These include sodium, potassium, aluminum, zinc, and calcium. While several of these metals have shown promise, magnesium has come up with many of the properties that make it an attractive alternative to lithium.

Is there anything better than lithium?

Fluoride Fluoride batteries are eight times more potent than lithium batteries, but that is easier said than done. That is because fluoride is an anion, or ion negatively charged, which is the magic behind high energy density but it is also why it is active and difficult to stabilize.
