“These chemicals are the same as any material that is extracted: they break down at the molecular level, the metals dissolve and we rebuild them,” he added. “We can recover up to 95% of all lithium battery materials and return them to new or economical batteries. These materials have a net environmental benefit in terms of mining. Going to a material processing source is more efficient than the supply chain. There is less emissions, less water use and less land displacement. ”
The market potential for lithium ion batteries remains huge. Market research firm Valuates says it estimated the potential of the lithium-ion battery to be $ 36.7 billion in 2019. “This is a key step in establishing a strong long-term basis for the vertical integration of the battery supply chain,” says Kunal Sinha, head of recycling at Glencore. “Together, we will expand the spectrum of battery supply solutions to a wider global customer base, particularly in Europe and North America.”
