New batteries are cheaper than lithium-ion at four times the capacity

This could help solve the problem of storing renewable energy.

A new type of low-cost battery could help solve the problem of renewable energy storage, giving us a better way to store solar and wind power when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.

The Challenge: 30% of global CO2 emissions are produced by coal-fired power plants, and decarbonizing the power grid is a critical part of tackling climate change.

We can accelerate the transition to a clean power grid by storing excess energy in batteries, but lithium-ion batteries are expensive.

Solar and wind energy have become considerably cheaper over the past two decades. However, these sources are still dependent on environmental conditions – without wind, turbines cannot spin, and if the sun is not shining, solar panels (usually) cannot harvest energy.

This makes these sources less consistent than fossil fuels, which can be shipped on demand, and so even as solar and wind continue to grow, utilities continue to rely on gas to fill the gaps and maintain stability. of the electrical network.

Energy storage: We can accelerate the transition to renewables by storing excess energy in batteries and then deploying it when the sun and wind don’t cooperate with demand. Many new renewable energy plants are associated with large banks of lithium-ion batteries, but lithium is expensive and operating it is bad for the environment in other ways.

“Storage solutions that are made from abundant resources like sodium…have the potential to provide greater energy security.”

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are a promising alternative for storing renewable energy. They rely on chemical reactions between a sulfur cathode and a sodium anode to store and deploy electrical energy, and they use low-cost materials that can even be easily extracted from salt water.

“Storage solutions that are made from abundant resources like sodium…have the potential to deliver greater energy security on a larger scale and enable more countries to join the transition to decarbonization” , said Shenlong Zhao, an energy storage researcher at the University of Sydney.

What’s new? Existing RT Na-S batteries had limited storage capacity and short cycle life, which hindered their commercialization, but now there is a new type of RT Na-S battery, developed by Zhao’s team.

According to their paper, the device has four times the storage capacity of a lithium-ion battery and an ultra-long lifespan – after 1,000 cycles it retained about half its capacity, which the researchers claim is “unprecedented”.

“This is an important breakthrough for the development of renewable energy.”

This leap was possible thanks to the incorporation of carbon-based electrodes and the use of a process called “pyrolysis” to improve the reactivity of sulfur and the reactions between sulfur and sodium.

“This is an important breakthrough for renewable energy development which, although reducing long-term costs, has faced several financial barriers to entry,” Zhao said.

Overview: So far, Sydney researchers have only created and tested lab-scale versions of their RT Na-S battery. They now plan to focus on scaling and commercializing the technology, which will likely take several years.

There are, however, many other alternatives to lithium-ion batteries that can be used for renewable energy storage today, including long-life flow batteries, massive water batteries, and batteries that store electricity as of heat in bricks, sand and other solid materials.

The sooner we increase our use of renewables and deploy more of these batteries – and innovative newcomers, such as the establishment of the University of Sydney – the better our chances of avoiding the worst possible effects of climate change.
