Longer lasting lithium ion batteries in extreme cold

When temperatures drop below freezing, cell phones need to be recharged frequently, and electric cars have shorter driving distances. This is because their lithium-ion battery anodes become sluggish, hold less power and drain energy quickly. To improve electrical performance in extreme cold, researchers reporting in ACS Central Science have replaced the traditional graphite anode in lithium-ion batteries with a corrugated carbon-based material, which maintains a rechargeable storage capacity of up to -31°F.

Lithium-ion batteries are great for powering rechargeable electronics because they can store a lot of energy and have a long life. But when the temperature drops below freezing, the electrical performance of these energy sources decreases, and when conditions are cold enough, they can fail to transfer any charge. That’s why some people living in the US Midwest are having problems with their electric cars in the dead of winter, and why it’s risky to use these batteries in space exploration. Recently, scientists determined that the flat orientation of graphite at the anode is responsible for the decreased energy storage capacity of lithium-ion batteries in cold weather. So, Xi Wang, Jiannian Yao and colleagues wanted to modify the surface structure of a carbon-based material to improve the anode charge transfer process.

To create the new material, the researchers heated a cobalt-containing imidazolate zeolite framework (known as ZIF-67) at high temperatures. The resulting 12-sided carbon nanosphere has a undulating surface which exhibits excellent electric charge transfer ability. Then the team tested the electrical performance of the material as an anode, with lithium metal as a cathode, in a coin-shaped battery. The anode exhibits stable charge and discharge at temperatures from 77°F to -4°F and maintains 85.9% of its energy storage capacity at room temperature just below freezing. In comparison, lithium-ion batteries made with other carbon-based anodes, including graphite and carbon nanotubes, hold almost no charge at freezing temperatures. When the researchers lowered the air temperature to -31°F, the anode made with the corrugated nanosphere was still able to charge, and during discharge, discharge almost 100% of the charge fed into the battery. Incorporating corrugated nanospheric material into lithium-ion batteries could open up the possibility of using this energy source at very low temperatures, the researchers said.
