Lithium-ion battery production begins in Endicott

If you’ve ever driven an electric car or used almost any technology, chances are it runs on a lithium-ion battery. But so far, almost all of them have been produced abroad.

Within the walls of Imperium3, you will find history written every day. Shailesh Upreti is the man leading the charge.

He is founder and president of the first full-scale lithium-ion battery gigafactory in North America. Production has officially begun since he last spoke with Spectrum News 1.

Close to 100 employees, both locally and from around the globe, have been hired The battery cells being produced are being sent to a third party for quality control before they are purchased and used around the world Imperium3 New York produces hundreds of batteries a day, meeting a worldwide demand

“As you can see, we have most of the machines up and running now,” he said. “So we are able to do unit operations where we, in principle, refine the processes and refine the personality of each machine and learn more about it. .”

Close to 100 employees, both locally and from around the world, were hired. The battery cells produced are sent to a third party for quality control before they are purchased and used by companies around the world.

“The batteries we manufacture here could be used by electric cars, trucks, buses and then also for home storage. We go all the way to a grid, one of our customers, putting a very large battery to be connected to the main grid system. So that means storing solar, wind, as well as filling the gap between demand and supply,” said Upreti.

To date, no lithium-ion batteries have been produced on this scale in North America. Every piece of equipment at Imperium3 New York plays a crucial role in producing hundreds of batteries a day, meeting global demand.

“What you’re looking at behind me is called the formation unit, and these are the units that turn cells on for the first time. So basically, the cell participates. So you’re loading and unloading a battery for the first time on the production floor,” Upreti said.

Sila Nanotechnologies is replacing the graphite anode, which makes up much of the bulk and about 15% of the weight of today’s lithium-ion batteries with a form of silicon that it claims will give battery cells a 20 to 40% increase in energy density while also charging faster.
