Lithium-Ion Battery Causes 4-Alarm Fire at 2230 Grand Concourse on January 9th

Fire marshals confirmed the cause of the 4-alarm fire that occurred at 2230 Grand Concourse on Sunday, January 9th.

As reported, the fire in the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx occurred on the same day as the Twin Parks specific fire tragedy, among several other fires that occurred in the borough on the same day.

If you are using a lithium battery, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage. Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made specifically for the device. If battery is overheated, discontinue use immediately. More featured at https://t.co/NpwdRdlElY #FDNYSmart pic.twitter.com/jPkzewBgLb

The fire at 2230 Grand Concourse occurred at 2.24 am when the fire department asked all hands to respond to the fire that occurred in a multi-dwelling house. The fire was brought under control around 5.12 a.m. the same morning. The FDNY confirmed that a fire marshal had stated that the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike / scooter.

Dirt bikes are illegal in New York City. Also, if your scooter has an electric or gas motor without a vehicle identification number, it is illegal and cannot be operated or sold. Violators could be fined and vehicles seized by police.

NYC DOT provided New Yorkers with information on E-bikes in New York City. Click here to learn more about e-bikes and other micro-mobility options in NYC.

According to https://sciencing.com, lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable, but lithium batteries are not. The accompanying tweet from the FDNY, further above, provides more context on how to avoid such fires.

What is the problem with lithium batteries?

The major weakness of lithium-ion batteries in electric cars is the use of organic liquid electrolytes, which are volatile and flammable when operating at high temperatures. Chemical leakage can be the result of an external force such as an accident.

What is the advantage and disadvantage of lithium-ion battery?

Li-ion batteries have no memory effect, a detrimental process where some repeated discharge / charging cycles can cause a lower capacity battery to ‘remember’. This is an advantage over both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH, which shows this effect. Li-ion batteries also have a low self-discharge rate of about 1.5-2% per month.

What is a disadvantage of lithium batteries in drones?

They also release slower than other types, so they will charge longer when not in use. If not properly charged or used, they may not provide peak performance for long and may even start smoking and catching fire.

What are the disadvantages of lithium batteries?

Despite its overall advantages, lithium-ion has its disadvantages. It is fragile and requires a protection circuit to maintain safe operation. Built in each package, the protection circuit limits the peak voltage of each cell during charging and prevents the cell voltage from dropping too low upon discharge.

How likely is a lithium battery to explode?

Lithium-ion batteries have a failure rate of less than one in a million. The failure rate of a quality Li-ion cell is better than 1 in 10 million. Industrial batteries, such as those used for power tools, are generally more rugged than those in consumer products.

Will my lithium battery explode? Fortunately, large explosions caused by Li-ion batteries are a rare occurrence. However, if exposed to the wrong conditions, they are unlikely to catch fire or explode.

How explosive is a lithium battery?

Lithium-based batteries are extremely powerful, and can be highly explosive. When recharged repeatedly, something called dendrites can form and can trigger a short circuit, causing the battery to explode into flames.

Will lithium ion batteries explode?

However, lithium-ion batteries are extremely sensitive to high temperatures and are inherently flammable. These battery packs usually degrade much faster than they normally would, due to heat. If a lithium-ion battery pack fails, it will explode into flames and can cause widespread damage.

What happens if a lithium battery explodes?

As a result of this high energy density, when a lithium-ion battery explodes, injuries can be devastating. A lithium-ion battery explosion can lead to serious burns and, in rare cases, even death.

Are lithium ion batteries highly flammable?

Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. Lithium batteries, or primary batteries, are used individually and cannot be recharged. They contain lithium metals that are highly combustible. Common applications include military use, medical applications, and certain consumer electronics.

How do you keep lithium batteries from exploding?

When your device is not in use, turn it off! Only transport your lithium-ion batteries in a specially designed container. Keep your batteries away from metals and other batteries. Lithium-ion batteries can explode if kept in a pocket or handbag and hit coins or keys.

How do I keep my lithium ion battery from exploding?

Minimize the Risk of Lithium Battery Fire

  • Avoid storing at high temperatures. Do not keep batteries in hot vehicles. …
  • Avoid keeping all your items containing lithium-ion batteries together. When traveling, especially by air, you must carry all your electronics in one bag. …
  • Avoid charging your batteries.

What is the best way to store lithium batteries?

In general, lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries should not be stored for longer periods of time, uncharged or fully charged. The best storage method, determined by extensive experimentation, is to store them at a low temperature, not below 0 ° C, with a capacity of 40% to 50%.

What can cause a lithium battery to explode?

The electrodes are immersed in a liquid called an electrolyte, which allows the movement of ions and consists of lithium salts and organic solvents. These organic solvents are the main fire hazard in Li-ion batteries.

Why would a lithium battery explode?

If the battery is damaged, a short circuit occurs. This spark can ignite the highly reactive lithium. Another possibility is that the battery can heat up to the thermal run point. Here, the heat of the materials puts pressure on the battery, which can produce an explosion.

Can lithium batteries cause explosions?

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many common devices. But under the right (or wrong) conditions, they can catch fire and even explode.

How likely will lithium batteries explode?

Remember the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 or hoverboard fires? But in reality, lithium battery fires are rare. According to the tech reporting site CNET, your odds of a lithium battery fire are about 1 in 10 million.

Are Tesla batteries lithium-ion?

Tesla uses built-in lithium-ion batteries to survive. Tesla Model 3 cars also have an energy density of 260 Wh / kg, making them capable of handling high-power batteries.

The new Tesla Lithium battery? Tesla’s 4680 lithium-ion batteries – with a 46-millimeter diameter and 80-millimeter length – hold about five times the energy of the current 2170 smaller cells. Tesla can use a smaller number of new cells for the same range of energy and drive, reducing costs.
