Lithium-ion batteries power nearly all of our devices, but if not properly maintained, they can catch fire, causing significant damage.
Lithium-ion batteries store huge amounts of energy in a small space. They can provide up to three times the voltage of other types of batteries. The problems start when they get overcharged, damaged, or start to build up a lot of heat to the point where they undergo thermal current and heat up to the point of ignition.
“Some of the problems that we see is that when they take these batteries and put them in a charging state, they can try to put them on a burning surface, like a bed or somewhere where the batteries can’t dissipate the heat, and then it builds up and heats up to the point, where it catches fire, and obviously when it catches fire, it starts to spread to the rest of the house,” explained Fire Captain John Prickett of the Paso Robles Fire Department.
Lithium-ion batteries are in phones, computers, drones, e-bikes and even electric cars.
There have been several lithium-ion battery fires in Paso Robles recently — one at a commercial battery storage facility and several house fires involving smaller devices being charged in flammable areas of the home.
Ways to prevent burns include using proper charging cables, avoiding shocks, being aware of where you are charging, unplugging after charging, keeping batteries in a cool, dry place, and watching for signs of damage.
Some warning signs that your battery is damaged or may catch fire are unusual heat radiating from the device, swelling or bulging, noise, odor or even smoke coming from the battery.
To learn more about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, the Paso Robles Fire Department is holding an open house this Saturday, October 15th at the Public Safety Center from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
