BMW is deepening its relationship with Solid Power for the commercialization of solid-state batteries

Earlier this month, one of BMW’s top engineers for next-generation batteries thought we had reached the peak of what lithium-ion batteries are capable of. Any improvements from here to today’s lithium-ion batteries will mostly focus on lowering their cost or increasing their energy density. For us to really meet our goals, the jump towards solid-state batteries is inevitable, and BMW is also in this technology.

BMW Deepens Its Relationship With Solid Power

It’s a well-known fact at this point that BMW (and Ford) are major investors in Solid Power, a Colorado-based startup that aims to be the first company to commercialize solid-state batteries. BMW, however, has further invested in the startup through what they call a Joint Development Agreement developed, and as a result, Solid Power will provide BMW with a research and development license that will allow them to acquire the company’s cell design and manufacturing methods.
The days of lithium-ion batteries are numbered, although it could still be a decade from now when battery technology becomes obsolete. For now, with this deeper partnership, BMW will be able to duplicate Solid Power’s pilot production line at its own facility in Germany and produce prototype cells using Solid Power’s proprietary technology.
But That Deeper Relationship Doesn’t Come For Free

Of course, investing in Solid Power isn’t free, or cheap. BMW will pay Solid Power $20 million through 2024 as part of an expanded Joint Development Agreement.
“BMW remains committed to the pursuit of all-solid-state batteries, a technology that we believe has significant potential for the future,” said Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Development. “We look forward to working more closely with Solid Power and adding the ability to produce solid-state cells based on Solid Power designs in our own pilot facility. We look forward to this agreement to accelerate the installation of our solid-state prototype line and our mutual company’s goal of commercializing the technology this promising cell.
Solid-state batteries are not only more energy dense, but also safer. This is because solid-state batteries use solid materials as electrolytes as opposed to liquids in lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries also use lithium metal in the anode instead of graphite carbon. This is why BMW, like a number of other electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, is betting big on this next generation of battery technology.
“Expanding our relationship with BMW is further evidence that both companies believe Solid Power is on the right track with its technology development,” said David Jansen, interim CEO, president and chair of Solid Power. “I am encouraged by the progress our team continues to make to achieve the company’s goals. Over the past few months, we have started shipping 20 Ah cells to our partners, including BMW, for initial testing and starting production of our initial EV cells. We look forward to bringing the manufacturing facility our electrolyte online and start the official automotive qualification process.

As the commercialization of solid-state batteries seems to be ten years away, BMW is still refining and improving its EV technology and its upcoming Neue Klasse platform, which will feature the company’s sixth-generation EV drivetrain and lithium-ion battery technology.

What metal will replace lithium in batteries? Batteries made of magnesium metal could have higher energy density, greater stability, and lower cost than current lithium-ion cells, scientists say in a study. Magnesium also has other benefits. Each magnesium atom releases two electrons during the discharge phase of the battery, compared to one electron for lithium.
Can any metal replace lithium?
For about a decade, scientists and engineers have been developing sodium batteries, which replace the lithium and cobalt used in current lithium-ion batteries with cheaper, more environmentally friendly sodium.
What can you replace lithium with? Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of battery on the market. However, alternatives to lithium are being developed to replace it. These include iron salt batteries, hemp-boron carbide batteries, glass batteries, and magnesium and silicon batteries.
What element could replace lithium?
1. Water magnesium battery. In the absence of several key problems, magnesium metal would be an ideal candidate to replace lithium ä¸ it is the eighth most common element, non-toxic, has a negative electrochemical potential, and a high capacity thanks to its addition. valence electrons.
What elements can replace lithium? Salt, or sodium, is a close chemical cousin of lithium. Although it has the same elements, it doesn’t have the same environmental impact, meaning it can be an alternative option. The solution could be sodium-ion batteries.
Will graphene replace lithium? Graphene sodium-ion and graphene aluminum-ion batteries can potentially replace lithium-ion batteries because they are cheaper and easier to recycle, and sodium and aluminum are more abundant in nature than lithium.
