Benchmark: China dominates Li-ion battery supply chain

China dominates the global lithium-ion battery supply chain to the point that it will be difficult to remove the country in favor of European or North American alternatives, according to analysis by Benchmark Minerals Intelligence. With the exception of mining, China controls at least half of the supply from every step needed to make a lithium-ion battery, according to Benchmark.

Although most of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese for batteries are mined outside of China, most of all minerals critical to the battery supply chain are further refined and processed in China.

Continuous research and development and technological innovation, the high speed of construction of infrastructures and factories, as well as the advantages in terms of manpower, have helped to form a complete chain from the mining and chemical industry to the production of electric vehicles.

Lithium is typically shipped to China for conversion to lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide. Nearly 60% of lithium refining took place in China, despite only 13% of the lithium being mined there.

The vast majority of cobalt is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC); three quarters of this is then processed by China. Much of this also comes from Chinese-owned mines in the DRC.

Among metals, China has the largest share of manganese refining. Despite extracting less than 10% of the global supply, China refines 95% of it.

The material over which China has the greatest overall dominance is graphite, says Benchmark. Not only does China mine 64% of its natural flake graphite, it has a monopoly on the conversion to spherical graphite needed for anodes. On the mining side, Benchmark expects China to drop to second place after Africa over the next decade.

More than two thirds of synthetic graphite, produced from petroleum coke, is produced in China. Most of this comes from Inner Mongolia, where electricity is cheap, or Sichuan Province where there is abundant hydroelectricity. However, recent changes in Inner Mongolia’s electricity policies and drought in Sichuan have put these sources under stress, notes Benchmark.

In 2022, Benchmark predicts that 70% of all batteries will be manufactured in China. This is supported by strong midstream control, with a near monopoly on anode production and more than three quarters of cathode production.
