Chemical engineers have found a way to more than double the life span of high voltage lithium-ion batteries.
The international team of researchers, based at the University of Queensland, has developed a lithium-ion battery of higher energy density than conventional batteries, uses less precious metal, and can remain stable for over 1000 cycles.
They have published their technique in Nature Communications.
“Our process will increase the life span of batteries in many things, from smartphones and laptops to power tools and electric vehicles,” said senior author and UQ researcher Professor Lianzhou Wang.
The team’s discovery revolves around the battery cathode: the positive side, which attracts negatively charged electrons as they move through a circuit.
Currently, for commercial lithium-ion batteries to work, their cathodes need the expensive and dangerous metal cobalt – otherwise the cathodes corrode too easily. Cobalt-free cathodes can make higher-voltage batteries and therefore more energy-intensive, but the corrosion problem means their life and function are limited.
Researchers are keen to find a cover that can protect the metals in the cathode without compromising battery performance.
Wang and colleagues discovered that an extremely thin epitaxial layer could protect a cathode made of lithium, nickel and manganese. Epitoxy is a form of crystal growth in which the crystal atoms are aligned with the atoms in the substrate (the thing they grow on).

In this case, the researchers found that a certain material (made from lanthanum, nickel, manganese and oxygen) grown epitaxially on cathode particles could prevent the cathode from dissolving.
The crystal layer is just an atom thick – so it doesn’t need a lot of material to make a big impact.
“This new approach incorporates minimal protective coating on a scaled process, paving the way for the use of these abundant high-voltage materials for next-generation high-energy batteries,” said Wang.
Wang says that except for better performance and cobalt-free, the battery operates much like conventional lithium-ion batteries.
“The battery can be operated at a higher voltage – about 4.5V, versus 3.7V for a conventional lithium-ion battery – which means higher energy densities can be provided,” he noted.
The researchers are now planning to commercialize the technology.
“We are now in discussion with our industry partners to assess the production process on a larger scale and to evaluate battery performance under various conditions,” said Wang.
He predicts that the battery might be ready for market in two to three years.
