In their work, a water calcium-ion battery has been shown using orthorhombic and trigonal polymorphs of molybdenum vanadium oxide (MoVO) as a host for calcium ions.

“Calcium ions are divalent, and therefore an ion insert will deliver two electrons per ion during battery operation,” explained Dr. Koratkar. “This allows for a highly efficient battery and reduces the mass and volume of calcium ions. However, the high ionic charge and the large size of calcium ions relative to lithium make it very challenging to insert calcium ions into the battery electrodes. We overcome this problem by developing a special class of materials called molybdenum vanadium oxide that contains large hexagonal and heptagonal-shaped channels or tunnels that flow through the material.
