What’s next for lithium-ion batteries? | Electronics360

The current chemistry of Lithium (Li) -ion batteries is generally considered to have reached their performance limits. From cell materials to battery designs, further enhancements are underway that can increase both performance and cost in the future, in anything from portable devices to electric vehicles (EVs).

One of the more promising solutions under development is the shift from graphite anodes to silicon anodes, according to new IDTechEx research. Silicon material has been used in the anode in small amounts, but has proved difficult in the past due to stability and life cycle problems.

However, over the past decade and a half, technology has evolved so that cells can use 5% to 100% silicon in the anode. IDTechEx forecasts a significant increase in the use of silicon anode materials in lithium-ion batteries as the technology matures, although graphite will remain the dominant anode until the 1930s.

IDTechEx said any improvement in cathode materials will be gradual, but a major shift in cathode technology and innovation may be due to how they are synthesized.

Current techniques require high temperatures over long periods of time using large amounts of reagent and water. This is not only costly but also has an environmental impact.

Nano One Materials is a company that develops a solution for the production of coated cathode materials in collaboration with Pulead, a cathode manufacturer. Another company, 6K Energy, uses microwave plasma reactors to produce cathode materials and can synthesize silicon anodes and solid electrolyte materials. This year, 6K raised $ 102 million in funding and entered into development deals with Albemarie, producer Li and the startup Our Next Energy.

Both the synthesized solutions promise a process improvement that will result in better yields, lower production costs and a lower environmental impact.

The ultimate reward seems to be the development of lithium-ion lithium-ion batteries that could significantly improve safety by replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with a solid electrolyte. This technology can also increase the energy density above 1000 Wh / I.

While IDTechEx predicts the market will grow to over $ 8 billion by 2031, liquid electrolytes will remain an important part of the market. In the meantime, the use of new additives and electrolyte formulas will help improve thermal stability, reduce vapor pressure, and improve performance so that these liquid batteries will have a longer life cycle than originally anticipated.

In electric vehicles, battery designs offer a way to improve performance. Many automotive companies are developing packaged cell batteries to eliminate materials associated with module housing and packaging efficiency. This helps to improve energy density and vehicle integration.

These space-saving battery packs can improve volume utilization by 50%. Some battery manufacturers, such as CATL, use a cell-to-pack design that can reach 72% volume utilization. While this will indeed maximize energy density and offer a way to cheaper long-range batteries, the designs have reduced usability, meaning they may be limited to electric vehicles only, IDTechEx said.

Finally, the development of lithium-ion batteries is moving towards more intelligent battery management systems (BMS), IDTechEx said.

BMS software and analytics can simultaneously improve the safety, lifetime and charging time as well as increase the battery capacity. This is obviously applicable to electric vehicles, but can also be used in other devices such as smartphones or power tools where it is desirable to shorten the charging time.

The OnePlus 10T smartphone can go from 1% to 100% in just 19 minutes thanks to smarter charging algorithms and more efficient temperature management, IDTechEx said. And BMS has the potential to improve other aspects of lithium-ion batteries, including lifespan, energy density, safety, and more.
