Characterization of Li-ion battery thermal runaway in ESSs and EVs – Physics World

Thermal runaway is an unwanted phenomenon with lithium-ion cells and batteries when they are improperly designed, manufactured, or used. As the size of these batteries increases exponentially and their use in confined spaces becomes more common, it is imperative to fully characterize the nature and products of thermal runaway. In this webinar, Judy Jeevarajan of Underwriters Laboratories details the need to perform such characterizations; methods for taking test subjects into thermal resonance; observed worst cases; and fire and smoke products for the test articles studied by ESRI. Finally, Jeevarajan provides some recommendations to address the prevention and propagation of thermal runaway in Li-ion batteries.

Judy Jeevarajan is vice president and executive director of the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI) at Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. She has worked in the battery field for over 25 years, with a primary focus on lithium-ion chemistry.

Jeevarajan serves on technical working groups and committees for standards organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories, Society of Automotive Engineers, International Civil Aviation Organization/Society of Aerospace Engineers, Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics, International Electrotechnical Commission, and American National Standards Institute. She currently leads efforts at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics to develop space safety standards for battery systems. She also serves as a member of the Informal Working Group and Panel on Dangerous Goods at the United Nations. Jeevarajan serves on the Advisory Board of the Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve University.

Prior to joining Underwriters Laboratories, she worked for NASA at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston for 12 years, serving as group leader for battery safety and advanced technology. Prior to becoming a civil servant at NASA, Jeevarajan spent five and a half years working on-site at NASA-JSC Lockheed Martin Space Operations.

Jeevarajan received his MS in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame and his PhD in Chemistry (Electrochemistry) from the University of Alabama. She is the recipient of numerous NASA awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA-NESC Award for Excellence in Engineering. She also received the 2019 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Award for Aeronautical Energy Distribution Systems and the 2020 Women of the Year Award for the Energy Storage Alliance of India – Energy Storage Systems Award.

Can I use a lithium battery in my car?

Absolutely, in most cases, our particular lithium chemistry works as a direct replacement for lead/acid batteries without any changes to the vehicle’s system settings.

Can you put a lithium battery in any car? Unless you own a McLaren MP4-12C, which comes with a lithium starter battery from the factory, your car’s alternator is not designed to properly charge a lithium battery. Some cars, such as Porsche’s track-oriented models (GT3, GT2, etc.) can be purchased with an optional lithium battery.
