Advanced batteries are the storage system favored by utilities and microgrids. The future of electricity – including the expected dramatic growth in electric vehicle adoption – is close. Or is it? This was the big question asked during an April 22 webinar hosted by the US Energy Association.

Battery cost and lithium shortage impacts
John Howes, Head, Redland Energy Group The question is not whether lithium batteries work or not. The question is at what cost. EVs still make up less than 5% of the U.S. car market, and costs have to come down for EVs to gain significant market share.
Ned Mamula, Economic Geologist and AuthorWhen you see the words “lithium scarcity,” that’s a misnomer; we have enough reserves, but we need to let the market system work (with more regulatory co-operation). We can’t just rely on imports or recycling. For example, there are proposals before DOE to take the natural lithium content in water from oil and gas sites.
Scott Aaronson, Senior VP, Security and Readiness. What we’re seeing is a lack of lithium as the mother of the device. Many companies are exploring alternative, alternative methods of storage, especially at grid scale. However, this “shortage” is not just about transport, or grid-based renewable energy, or supply chains. We need to take a holistic look at the whole value chain and develop technologies that will contribute over the coming decades.
Howes: One potentially attractive method is to facilitate battery replacement – exchange at a gas station. There is a company in California (Ample Inc.) that is doing that now, and we may see more.
The prospects of bidirectional EV charging
Aaronson: EV two-way battery currents are very exciting. But it introduces the smart grid paradox: when you use more devices and communications, you completely introduce cyber vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, you can increase the reliability of grid battery systems by baking it, rather than bolt it on after the fact. New technologies that enhance resilience should be treated as the critical infrastructure.
Diversifying lithium-ion sources
Eric Dresselhuys, CEO, ESS IncIt takes a complex supply chain to build batteries. The minerals are mined in countries where environmental controls and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) norms are not in place. China buys the mineral rights, transports the ore to China, refins the minerals, then sends it to the United States. We can improve the supply chain process faster than we can improve mining.
Mamula: We import lithium from non-liability countries. A real environmentalist would say “if we have to mine, let’s do it here where there is regulatory oversight and production processes are better.”
Dresselhuys: It amounts to a hidden subsidy when lithium mining is done abroad.
Howes: EPRI’s world-class work within the Low Carbon Resource Initiative (LCRI) presents a wide range of options for a low carbon future.
Lithium-ion substitutes?
Aaronson: Demand is through the roof. Energy companies tend to pile up. We need to look for redundancy. If lithium is one point of failure, we need to look at alternatives.
Dresselhuys: Non-lithium-based storage can take much of the pressure off market growth. We need huge quantities of batteries for storage. We need to break out use cases to select the most appreciated battery chemistry features. We will not reduce the amount of lithium batteries used in the near term, but we can reduce the rate of growth by using alternative technologies where they are more suitable. At ESS, we build iron redox flow batteries using abundant materials that contain iron, salt and water, which can be 100% recycled. But these are targeted at the grid, not at EVs or phones.
Howes: We need to look at other elements that can be put into battery storage such as iron, lead and copper. They may have greater efficiency. The lead industry is working with Argonne (National Laboratory) on that. DOE says lithium is not the only game in town.
Stephanie Shaw, Technical Executive Officer, EPRI The cost-benefit analysis of battery chemistry needs to include the material life cycle and any potential second life. It is also important to define the environmental and social costs in the analysis.
Llewellyn King, the Creator, Executive Producer & amp; Host of White House ChronicleSilicon is an essential (structural) additive to make lithium batteries cheaper and have a greater impact in the long run. Some manufacturers are now using graphite, but if they replace that with silicone, the battery will be lighter and safer.
The evolution of battery recycling
Shaw: Recycling lithium-ion batteries to maintain high purity is difficult. Solid state batteries can reduce the complexity of recycling. Sodium or zinc chemistry options could also make recycling easier. As battery capital costs fall, manufacturers will recognize that planned recycling will make them differential in the market.
Howes: When we talk about recycling, we should remember that lead is 99% recycled; it’s more of a closed loop.
Shaw: Environmental justice and the promotion of fairness are everywhere now in public dialogue; these issues are among the most complex we face. These concerns will permeate all levels of regulation and operation. They will affect our lands and our work.

One of the most promising alternatives is the use of sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries over lithium-ion batteries. Na-ion batteries have many advantages over traditional Li-ion batteries in a variety of end-uses. Lithium and sodium are both alkali metals, and right next to each other on the periodic table.
