LG Energy’s LG Energy (LGES) solution from LG Chem is expanding its battery range with Lithium-Ion LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) technology, which is gaining ground as the most cost-effective.
We’ve already heard rumors of LFP development in 2021, which were later confirmed by the LGES public offering.
This month, LGES ‘director of energy storage systems for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Jorg Jurgens revealed at the Smarter E event in Munich, Germany that LFP chemistry will join NMC for new energy storage products.
One of the most interesting things is that the upcoming two types of LFP battery cells will be manufactured at its wholly owned lithium-ion cell factory in Michigan, the Netherlands, which was approved for an expansion of $ 1.7 billion in March.
According to the pv magazine, the two new cells will be manufactured in the same format and size as the current cells (for easy use in the same modules and racks as before), suggesting they will be LFP cells in pockets (instead of prismatic as we usually see ).
Two LFP cells in preparation will enter the market in 2023 and 2024:
Our guess is that there is a chance that large-sized cells could potentially be used in electric vehicles, but there is no confirmation of this.
Assuming that the existing plant in the Netherlands has a production capacity of 5 GWh per year, and the expansion will be “fivefold”, in a few years there may be a total of 25 GWh per year, including approximately 20 GWh of LFP cells.
“The new battery cells will be manufactured in the Netherlands in the US state of Michigan, and double-digit production lines on a gigawatt scale will be added to the plant,” said Jurgens.
According to Businesskorea, LGES and other South Korean manufacturers are also looking for another cobalt-free battery – LNMO, in which cobalt is replaced with a higher proportion of manganese.
This should make cells cheaper, but likely requires a lot of development so as not to sacrifice too much energy density or other parameters.
We look forward to seeing more solutions compete with each other in the entry-level electric vehicle and energy storage segments as these are key to making EVs more affordable.
