International insurer Club TT is calling for greater vigilance in transporting lithium batteries to help curb a turbulent rise in cargo fires.
The air transport industry has recently revised regulatory restrictions on the transportation of lithium batteries, which came into effect on April 1. This could lead to more offshore transportation, the club warned, creating a greater risk to maritime trade.
Club TT’s Director of Risk Management, Peregrine Storrs-Fox, also believes that a small minority of carriers seem determined to avoid complying with the rules for this cargo, at the expense of other carriers.
Lithium batteries must be certified before shipment. This involves a series of rigorous tests carried out by an approved independent laboratory, primarily to ensure that they can withstand daily use and transportation. The carrier and manufacturer are responsible for testing.
However, due to a sharp increase in demand, substandard and unproven batteries have become commonplace. In particular, e-commerce platforms enable global trade of these potentially lethal products, often by violating global standards and regulations.
