BROCKTON – Eleven people were displaced Thursday night after a pair of fires were started just hours apart in a multi-family house on Bartlett Street, Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli said.
At about 8:00 pm Thursday, the Brockton Fire Department responded to reports of “a massive fire breaking out in the basement” of 168 Bartlett St.
Firefighters battled the two-alarm blaze, which they believe was caused by lithium-ion batteries that were charging a scooter in the basement, for about 45 minutes, Nardelli said.
Nardelli said there has been an increase in lithium-ion battery fires in Brockton, and that these types of fires are generally caused by something called “thermal runaway,” which is when “the heat generated inside a battery exceeds the amount of heat that is lost to its surroundings,” he said.
“These types of fires can flare up after they’ve been put out and can be very dangerous,” he said.
This is exactly what happened on Bartlett Street, he said.

“There was heavy smoke and extensive damage to the basement and first floors of the house,” Nardelli said.
Firefighters recovered about 40 lithium-ion batteries from the basement after putting out the flames.
A firefighter was checked into an area hospital after he was injured in the blaze. His injuries are not serious. All 11 residents of the house have been displaced and are being cared for by the Red Cross.
“Please charge all your devices properly and don’t buy cheaper versions of the batteries you’re supposed to charge your devices with,” Nardelli advises residents.
