As many shoppers purchase items such as cellphones, laptops and power tools during the holiday gift-giving season, the Honolulu Fire Department is warning the public about the “potential hazards” of lithium-ion batteries found in those items.
Lithium-ion batteries are very safe, however, problems can arise if the batteries are damaged or mishandled, said Capt. Jonathan Darr of the fire department’s Hazardous Materials Unit at a recent news conference held at the Kakaako Fire Station.
A chemical reaction called “thermal runaway” occurs when lithium-ion battery cells enter an uncontrolled self-heating state, Darr said.
Fire officials say thermal runaway can cause the battery to reach extremely high temperatures and produce lots of toxic, flammable gases that can appear as white smoke.
“This could result in intense fires,” Darr said.
“For example, if the battery overheats and you notice a smell or change in shape or color or leakage or strange noises from the device, then it is possible that the device is going into thermal runaway,” he added. If possible, move the item away from anything that could catch fire and call 911.
The fire service recommends charging devices with lithium-ion batteries outside the home or in well-ventilated areas.
Some of the causes of thermal runaway are faulty or damaged batteries and overcharging.
In November, a fire broke out at a house on Monte Street in Kalihi after an electric bicycle that was being charged in the bedroom caught fire. The bedroom was also used as a storage room.
Honolulu Firefighter Kamehalani Ortiz, who investigated the fire, said the e-bike was surrounded by clothing and other flammable items. “Once that caught fire, it started a chain reaction that was very difficult to stop.”
Five people who were in the house at the time escaped the fire safely after being alerted by smoke detectors.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to the thermal runaway of the lithium-ion battery in the e-bike. Damage to the home and its contents was estimated at more than $170,000.
From January 2020 to December 12, the fire department reported 386 fires on buildings or structures. Of that number, 167 were accidental fires, of which 58 were caused by lithium-ion batteries.
Experts recommend that e-bike owners do not leave the e-bike unattended while charging. Also, follow the manufacturer’s charging and storage instructions and don’t leave it charging overnight.
“Just a little bit of prevention will save everyone a pound of pain,” Ortiz said at a news conference.
The Honolulu Fire Department has issued the following safety tips for lithium-ion batteries:
>> When purchasing a device, look for the Underwriters Laboratories mark indicating that the product has been safely tested
>> Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for filling and storage. Always use a power cord and adapter made specifically for the device.
>> Do not charge the device under a pillow, on a bed or near flammable materials.
>> Keep batteries/devices at room temperature. Do not place in direct sunlight
>> Keep batteries away from anything flammable.
